Web Jargons

If you do not know the difference between HTML and HTTP, it is clear that you do not know your Web Jargons. There are a number of jargon on the Internet with new ones adding up everyday. It is not necessary to be familiar with all of them, but it beneficial if you know them.

Some of the important ones are:

Apache
This is the most popular web server and is absolutely free. It can be freely used by one and all.

Browser
This software is used to view web pages. For e.g: Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera.

Blog
This is the short form of 'weblog'. It is actually a web page that is updated on a regular basis. This is usually created with the use of a Blogging software.

Cache
Cache is where a browser keeps its downloaded files in case it is needed in the future. The site's logo and navigation graphics are stored automatically in the cache.

Cookies
These are small files that the websites store on your computer. Sometimes it happens that you open a site and you are automatically logged in. This happens when the site gave a cookie to your browser.

FTP
It stands for File Transfer Protocol and is the usual method of uploading files to a server.

Favorite
It is also known as Bookmark. You can save the links of the pages that you would like to visit again. 

Flash
It is a plug-in that displays animations and animated websites. It has been developed by Macromedia.

HTTP
This means Hypertext Transfer Protocol. It is used to send all sorts of data, including files and graphics.

HTML
It stands for Hypertext Markup Language. This is the language in which the web pages are written.

ISP
It stands for Internet Service Provider. This is the company that provides Internet access to you in exchange for a fee.

Link
The text on a web page that takes you to another page when clicked is called a Link.

PHP
PHP means Hypertext Processor. It is used for the retrieval of text from a database and its addition to a page.

URL
It stands for Uniform Resource Locator and is a technical term for a web address. It is called uniform because you can use similar addresses for totally different kinds of resources.

W3C
W3C refers to World Wide Web Consortium. It is a body that is in charge of the web. It decides what is to be added or removed from the websites, besides other things.
