Titles and Headlines: It's Not a Newspaper

Titles are the most important part of any website. However, they are also the most ignored elements. Headlines are very difficult to make in a proper manner. Headlines, in web, are just plain things as in print and are much more interactive.

Title Bar, Favorites, History and Searches
All your web titles appear in either of the four places, i.e., the title bar, favorite menu, history panel, and search engine results. It is true that titles look good on the home page but they are really not required anywhere else.

Keep it Concise, but Self-Explanatory
These four places have something in common, that they are separated from the rest of the context, and are limited in space. The headlines must be concise, and a maximum of ten words. However, they must express the meaning in a complete manner. The reader should know what to expect from the article and the website after reading it.

Useful Words First
In the history and favorites bar, there is a room for just about 2 or 3 words. So, it will be better if you write the most important words first.

For e.g:

Why Web Titles and Headlines are nothing like Newspaper Ones.
Titles and Headlines: It's Not a Newspaper.

Compare the two headlines. If seen in the favorite bar, in the first case you will see Why Web Titles and in the second you will see Titles and Headline. A dash or colon can be helpful for this.

Keywords
Inclusion of keywords in very important in Titles, especially for search engines. They should also be relevant so that your visitors can find exactly what they are looking for. However, that does not mean that you need to put your keywords in all titles. Such sites are only looking to get search engines ranking and do not provide the visitors what they really want.

Don't be scared to put words like 'How to' in the title. If the article is an interview, mention the word interview there. For product comparisons, use the word comparison. This approach will help you to attract more visitors and this way the readers are more likely to stay and read the rest of the articles.
