The Top 10 Biggest Web Design Mistakes
There are some common mistakes that are present in a number of website which drive the traffic away from these sites.
The top 10 biggest mistakes are:
* Too Many Ads
Some websites put in much more ads than what are actually required in order to generate more revenue. To check this, visit your site as a visitor and judge whether the ads are more than enough.
* Unclear Layout and Navigation
On some websites, people need to take a large number of steps to perform even the simplest tasks. Take care to put the most used and popular items on the front page.
* Unclear Linking
It is better to keep contrasting colors to display links as well as underlining them to make it clear.
* No Marking for External Links
Every website has two types of links, i.e., Internal and External. It is better to mark both internal and external links with different colors or by the use of some symbols. This is important to make it easy to identify. Also, it is better if the external links open in a new window so that the visitors do not have to leave your site to reach the link.
* Plugin Overload
Take care not to use too many plug ins in a single website. For instance, if your site contains Java then it should not have Flash or a media player. However, the same plug in can be used more than once.
* Flash Intros
Avoid the use of Flash in the introduction page. However, some people still make use of them. It is a widely known fact the Flash intros are widely disliked.
* Unlabeled Email Links
In case there are links on your website that would direct people to send out an email, it must be clearly marked with the word 'Email'. If a click of the mouse on someone's name links you to an email page, people might get irritated as they could be in search of more information about that particular person.
* Broken Links
Make sure all your links work. It is very frustrating to find a useful site and realize later that it has not been updated since a long time and the links don't work. Therefore, the site must be regularly updated.
* Badly-sized Text
Keep in mind not to make the text too big or too small as it become difficult to read. Keep it to a standard size. Always use relative text sizing as it allows the visitors to adjust the text size according to their convenience.
* Strange Fonts
Do not use uncommon and strange fonts. Use simple ones such as Arial, Verdana and the like. Use of uncommon font is a problem because they would not be displayed on most of the computers or some might be hard to read. Unusual fonts can be used in logos or heading only if they will be displayed as images.
