The Question of Scroll Bars
Do Users Like to Scroll?
Most of the users don't like to scroll to view a web page. Scrolling should be provided on a page only if it provides some added value. However, most often it is not necessary for basic usability.
The Mouse Wheel Revolution
People have now become more receptive to scrollable pages due to the invention of the mouse wheels and other similar devices. These devices make scrolling quite easy. Due to this, people do not mind scrolling. However, you should not rely too much on it.
Don't Eliminate it Completely – But Pay Attention
To avoid any problems due to scrolling, place all the important things in the places that can be reached without a need to scroll. Even on the smallest monitors, people should have the option to either scroll or click. Also, give people the opportunity to link to other parts of the page by a click on the links at the top of the page such as a table of contents.
No Horizontal Scrolling
A kind of scrolling which is completely unsuitable for the web is horizontal scrolling. It cannot be done with the use of the mouse wheels. The web browsers are not meant for it. Thus, a website with horizontal scrolling is considered to be a terrible idea.
Don't use Flash for Scroll Bars
A huge mistake sometimes made by few of the designers is the creation of the non-standard scroll bars with the use of Flash. It might look good but would even be more useless than the standard scroll bars.
The scroll bars created with the use of Flash do not work with mouse wheels and keyboard shortcuts. It will not work in the required way with ease and hence is very frustrating for the users. It is true that the traditional scrolls bars look very unattractive but the users are used to work with them and be familiar with them. No one would want to learn something completely only to make use of your website.
Scroll Bars v/s New Pages
Replacement of your scroll bars with pagination is always a bad idea. If the user has to flip from one page to another to read a single article, that is even worse than scrolling. It is true that people do not like scrolling, but they would hate it even more to wait for pages to load. Often people abandon the pages even if they were in the middle of reading an article, in case it takes a little long for the pages to load.
